Title: Using a collage technique in teaching
visual arts
1.0 Introduction
Education of visual art
actually provides opportunities for students to develop interest of students in
awareness and sensitivity to the values of art and their
surroundings. Education of visual arts it’s a part of fundamental in formation
student to create their imagination and student thinking more creative. Student
actually can develop their idea to express and expression themselves in the
form of visual art. Education schools are related with fine arts, visual
communication and craft traditional that can trained students look at things
with another
Perspective either broad
or aesthetic aspect based on element and principle art to applied in their
artwork. Art subject its basic teach for fine arts (drawing, painting,
sculpture and print), design (industrial design and interiors design
environment and landscape) visual communication (graphic arts and multimedia),
as well for traditional arts is (pottery / ceramics, batik, weaving and
embroidery wood carving).
Education
according to Plato, a Greek philosophical, is a physical and spiritual nurture
in order to reach a level of beauty and perfection at its highest. Clearly,
education is an effort to develop a perfection and beauty in the individual.
This notion is in line with what is expressed by one of the Greek philosophical
again. Visual art actually is a product / invention the artwork that can be
seen through the eye sight. Results / work force is derived absolute mind and
art in one's mind and translated into tangible objects, and can be seen as a
picture, sculpture, model etc. . Feldman (1976) found that through Visual Art
Education, Child to raise awareness of the occurrence of changes in the people
from time to time. Actually all parent must give a children about education art
starting their still in a progress to grown up this is because

education can give expression activities and experiences for student to make
sense of the world others that art visual art education also can teach a
student to find solutions to deal with feelings and to respond to creative
experience this awareness is fundamental to the development of visual
expression and to the student personal response to creative experience. In art
making involves two and three-dimensional work in a range of media.
Appreciating promotes understanding of the inherent qualities in artworks and
aesthetic enjoyment. In developing the programmed, the expressive or making
activities are balanced with opportunities to see and to make a personal
response to visual art forms of different styles, periods and cultures.
1.1 Statement of the research problem
1.1.1 Student nowadays has done using a collage
technique in their leaning art process but they should know the type of
characteristic of media and materials are used in collage technique. ‘The
student should be encouraged to use their eyes and imagination and to handle
the materials in order to develop an appreciated of their qualities. The
student should and think for themselves in order to produce personal artwork
and to exercise their own creative power’. Haley, I. (1971). Creative
Collage. London: Branford SBN. Student must be a creative thinking to
create an image and uses various media example newspaper, box, zinc, media from
nature or discarded materials and others things based on collage technique.
As
an art teacher should give an emphasis an element in art to student uses a
media to create image based on collage technique, Student should know the
criteria or function of media they are used to create image this is because
every single part of media actually give a different type of meaning.
The collage technique in
teaching visual arts at school, student must know the shape on image or
landscape and from there student should create collage based on shape there are
study. Has also some picture are so complex, and also unresolved that student
had been clearer and more decisive to create a collage for example image
landscape setting sun student must know the shape of sun and the depth of
field. Student must know the foreground, middle ground and background as
knowledge to create collage. In visual art we need to look at the teaching
visual art in school, among of student possibility do not like a draw because
student is not interested in the subject of art, but as a teacher should be
able to think as a way to attract the interest of students in the art.
1.2 Research objectives
1.2.1
The research objectives of this study are:
I. To study the artwork based on collage
technique
II. To identify a materials are uses in collage
technique
III To identify student’s creativity student to in making artwork based on
collage technique.
1.3 Research questions
1.3.1 The research questions of this study are:
I. What
is the artwork based on collage technique?
II. What are
the materials in uses on collage technique?
III. What is
the creativity student to make their artwork based on collage technique?
1.4 Operational Definitions
1.4.0 To develop collage technique student should know
more detail about an element in art it’s a line, color, shape, form, texture
and the lastly is space. These elements actually give a different type of
meaning. Beside that in study researcher focus on an imaginative student to
create an artwork based on collage technique in four parts. The part is the
materials to make collage technique, the technical and surface are student
uses, the exploration/ experimental by student to create a collage technique
and the expression: emphasis and direction.
1.4.1 Imaginative
student: Isa,
M. J. (2000) in his book Bentuk dan Makna. Shah
Alam : FSSR, UITM “Every piece of
artwork has its own unique shape and meaning, forms and meanings are produced
or displayed by an artist is defined as visual communication”. Imaginative means student should creative
thinking to use an object like twigs, leaves, cones and others media is often
termed an arrangement or design. This limitation leads to a greater
appreciation of the use color mixing in others media and to more thoughtful use
of texture.
1.4.2 Technical surface: According Haley, I. (1971) “Collage is a term now often
misused it really refers to materials glued on to a background and not
stitched. The method is a good way of learning to arrange shapes, tones and
color and of handling different surface”. That
so encouraging creative thought it can helps children to select and to make decisions
because they can juggle with the shape, colors and texture seeing them in
various positions before finally being glued down.
1.4.3 Exploration/ experimental: According Haley, I. (1971), “Any materials student can
explore to develop collage thoughtful and imaginative use of materials should
be stressed throughout if the work is to serve any true purpose and remain
creative”. Students have to
undergo a process of exploration during the learning process the case
study is a using collage technique in making artwork and the technique actually
it’s represents about a material are uses.
1.5 Limitation of the study
The
study based on one case study focus by student in secondary school especially
to form 4 and 5, this is because student should be open their mind to create
creative artwork based on collage technique. The level of student also
important to student think a media are uses to make artwork based on collage
technique. Student form 4 and 5 it’s a best choice to conduct in learning
process.
The crux of teachers’
professional growth, is the development of a capacity to observe and analyze
the consequence for student of different teaching behavior and materials and to
learn make continuous modification of teaching on the basis of cues student convey.

1.6 Significance of the
Study
The
significance of this study is for student especially to create a drawing based
of collage technique. In this fact Collage has since become a major art form
and has evolved from simple paper Shapes (Edward Betts, 1993) BETTS, E. (1993),
the reason why collage is a major art form because the collage technique
actually teaching how to create structure on developed image. Simple paper
shapes that mean study a composition in size and framed although collages of
this sort are primarily studies.
1.5.1 According (Meyers, H. (1963) “Newspaper and
poster collage, Pieces of poster or newspaper, also other paper with an
interesting surface texture”. Collage art
consist with a various materials such as fabric, wood or paper glued on a
surface. Making a collage can be an interesting way to display images.
Collage
technique also can be a background on the artwork this is because it’s easy to
make by student. In a collage, a variety
of disparate elements are brought together in a single cohesive picture plane
together they form a new artistic idea. Three-dimensional elements can be mixed
with paint and paper to create a fresh new image of exciting design, texture
and color. A collage technique also can produce any artwork not only in
painting or mix media artwork but the collage technique also can use in an
illustration computer , image by photograph and others technique based on art
conceptual to make artwork more creative.
Beside that significance of this study researcher want to student and
among of art teacher open their mind to more create artwork more creative use a
collage technique. It’s not just make a painting or something related with art
but the benefit from this study researcher want to student and among of art
teacher look a materials at surrounding that a have to develop artwork based on
collage technique.
So than that student can look the stronger of materials and can match
with image are their done. For example the material from nature, when the
student look a root of tree student can think what are the type of image its
match with the root and what are the technical student can uses to make an
artwork based on collage technique, so from that student can more thinking to
create artwork. Not only must a color in painting but student think part of
technical there are can uses to making artwork.
